That explains how we (NSU) beat them so badly. It didn't hurt that we had Deacon Lewis at QB (Gulf States Conference MVP in both football and baseball). We had a pretty good defense also. The next year we won 7-0. Those two games were the prelude to the famous 42-39 last-minute Tech victory which you love to remind me about occasionally. Good story, Nico.

Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-25140448662098305212013-06-30T23:02:47.689-05:002013-06-30T23:02:47.689-05:00From Ike Futch: There were some good people and go...From Ike Futch: There were some good people and good times when we were all at Tech together back then. From Larry Powell (Shreveport Times, 1967-68): Do you remember that 1968 was the year the new Tech stadium opened -- not quite complete. I recall stepping over an open-to-the-ground gap near the press box entrance. I got sent to cover the SECOND game at the new stadium because The Times had neglected to cover the first game and people were ticked about it and I don't think anybody else wanted to walk into that storm. I had a great time -- Bradshaw threw a long, long TD pass to Robbie Albright and it got called back. So they lined up, ran the same play and it looked like instant replay.
It was a great day....
Because I was the "floating staffer," that year I got to cover high school games with Bert Jones and Joe Ferguson at quarterback and college games with Bradshaw and James Harris at quarterback. And I covered some Shreveport Braves games with Ralph Garr working his way into the majors. No misguided sportswriter ever had a better year than that; met Joe Louis, too. And the pitcher Cecil Upshaw ...
OK, I'm done. My old guy pills are wearing off and I have to go back to typing on something that might pay money ...maybe.
Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-2747366036289395542013-06-27T09:53:47.438-05:002013-06-27T09:53:47.438-05:00From Maxie Hays: I love it, Nico. I was in the beginning of my coaching career in Southwest Louisiana in 1966 and 1967 and kind of lost touch with Louisiana Tech football. I had graduated with my football heros in 1962-63: Jack Lestage, Wayne Parker, Billy Jack Talton, Billy Ware (I roomed with Billy, a center from Selma, Ala., for three years), Andy Farless, Johnny Hudson, Mickey Slaughter, Charlie Bourgeois, Andy Malone, Mickey Strother, Pat Lynch, Pat Collins, John Robert Williamson, Jerry Griffin, Bud Alexander, Pat Garrett, etc., etc. I knew Terry and Phil were QBs at Tech at that time, but that's about it. Your blog is so interesting and funny.Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-55408694990963115212013-06-27T09:51:17.071-05:002013-06-27T09:51:17.071-05:00From O.K. I did a column (in the Ruston Daily Leader) several weeks ago about both of them, too, and the flatout slim odds of two guys of such national prominence not only attending the same university, but playing on the football team and at the same position in the same era. A four-time Super Bowl winner and patriarch of the No. 1 reality show in America; what are the odds of that happening?
Also did a "mood" piece several weeks ago after going to West Monroe and "just happening" to drive by the Duck Commander store to buy a bobblehead doll of Phil (honest ... ha) and the tourists were lined almost around the building. Guy at the front door handing out Duck Commander catalogues said 200-300 folks DAILY show up these days, and Kay told me recently that, on a DAILY (not weekly, not monthly) basis, they get 200-300 request for public appearances; she said she and Phil hardly are getting to enjoy "retirement" days. Ha. So that was his first game against his alma mater. The next season, 1968, one of Tech's sweetest victories was at Southern Miss, 27-20, and it wasn't that close because USM scored a TD in the final minute.Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-25095586271946910492013-06-27T08:18:37.292-05:002013-06-27T08:18:37.292-05:00From Cynthia Sellman Mendez: I wonder how differen...From Cynthia Sellman Mendez: I wonder how different things would be if Phil hadn't walked away from that '68 season.Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-85592652451728885552013-06-27T08:16:43.022-05:002013-06-27T08:16:43.022-05:00From Tom Morris: This Duck Dynasty thing has just ...From Tom Morris: This Duck Dynasty thing has just blown out of the water. People detour their vacation travel through West Monroe just to stop at the 40x40 souvenir shop in the warehouse. Phil & Co. know it's not a real reality show, but re-enactments of family and company history with, yes, embellishments for entertainment's sake.
Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-54308882354001775082013-06-27T07:33:09.425-05:002013-06-27T07:33:09.425-05:00From Dr. Richard Leach: Good job, Nico. Most people who attended Tech forget how miserable the football team was in some of those years that we were there. It brings back some memories, though. I do remember that whipping Southern Miss put on Tech in Shreveport. I also remember the Southern players coming across the field after the game and giving Maxie Lambright handshakes and hugs.
Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.com
