The Bulldogs drove the length of the field, 11 plays, after Boise had scored to take the lead with 3:42 remaining. The next week Tech won the first Division II national championship.
That TD pass was one of what I consider the three greatest TD pass plays in Tech history (to my knowledge).
The others:
-- 1968: Terry Bradshaw to Ken Liberto, 89 yards with 12 seconds remaining, to beat Northwestern State 42-39 in the State Fair game in Shreveport in Lambright's second season at Tech.
-- 1999: Sub QB Brian Stallworth to Sean Cangelosi, 29 yards (on 4th-and-23) with 2 seconds remaining to beat No. 18-ranked Alabama 29-28 (with Kevin Pond's PAT kick) in Birmingham. Alabama went on to win the SEC championship. That was Tech's second victory over Alabama in three years. I had never seen Terry throw up close and it was jaw-dropping impressive. I remember thinking that his arm was unreal. Had never seen anything like it.
Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-18221800728621254422016-12-19T22:24:03.841-06:002016-12-19T22:24:03.841-06:00From Jim Pruett: As you know, I have never paid a ...From Jim Pruett: As you know, I have never paid a lot of attention to football. But I well remember when Lambright came, and things changed. I never met him. (Aillet was a living legend. Personable even to kids like me, so the change was mainly felt.)
Reading your Lambright blogs has been fun. He sounds like a man like my dad -- tough, a man of his time. And very smart.Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-79647731968844729332016-12-19T22:21:00.986-06:002016-12-19T22:21:00.986-06:00From Jim Willis: Your blog on coach Maxie Lambrigh...From Jim Willis: Your blog on coach Maxie Lambright was excellent as it captured what all knew and none, as far as I know, have fully acknowledged: His ability to coach such a great group of coaches and their enduring high regard for him.
Reading these comments should make all aware of how many of us still bear the influence of the names Aillet and Lambright. Coach Jimmy Mize used Aillet techniques to give offensive linemen a graduate degree in blocking. My respect for Lambright was so immediate after he arrived that I shuttered at the thought of failure to not fully use what I had previously learned under his predecessor. Coach Lambright reminds me of the colonel in the movie "Good Morning Vietnam" -- firm and willing to judge others fairly by what he observed, not by biased opinions. In the fullness of time it all worked out, but there certainly was some visible stress on campus in the process.
I was a freshman in 1963 and this was all "big time" stuff for me. I remember at the halftime of the [homecoming] game, they drove a cool-looking two-door white Pontiac Grand Prix out to midfield. As I recall, it had a trailer attached with a brand new golf cart on it! Pretty impressive.
Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5125402567351329247.post-85849480622921244612016-12-19T22:16:27.440-06:002016-12-19T22:16:27.440-06:00From Glenn Murphy: Reading the Lambright story, I ...From Glenn Murphy: Reading the Lambright story, I remember that we were practicing for the Akron [bowl] game [1968]. Coach Lambright walked by me and said, "Mister All-GSC." I was a little embarrassed and I said, "Aw, coach, get off my back." He said, "I'll get off your back and get on your ass." Quickly, I said, "I was kidding, coach." He chuckled and walked off. I didn't know if he was going to "deck" me.
Nico Van Thynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07072351355184106484noreply@blogger.com
